“The unprecedented attack on front line services in Redbridge and elsewhere is not an economic necessity but is part of a wider agenda to undermine the public sector.”
So said the preamble to Labour’s motion to the budget setting council meeting at Ilford Town Hall on Thursday 3rd March.
The Tory led administration rejected the motion and pushed through £25 million cuts over the next 3 years with the help of their Lib Dem accessories. £15 million will be cut in the current year.
Cllr Bob Littlewood, Leader of the Labour Group said:
“The cuts proposed in this budget are unprecedented and unnecessary. The coalition government wants to dismantle the public services in this country.”
Bob Littlewood went on:
“David Cameron has said that the ConDems “will create a new presumption… that public services should be open to a range of providers competing to offer a better service.” Cameron also says “It’s a vital part of our mission to dismantle Big Government and build the Big Society in its place.”
But community groups and charities are suffering already because of the cuts….so Camerons advocacy of the big society will boil down to business taking over public services.
So Big Society Mark 1 becomes Big Society Mark 2
He’s no longer lecturing us to volunteer, he’s now telling us that business can take over – and you can bet your life that some very BIG businesses will be involved
A lot has been made of the fact that city firms are providing a large proportion of the donations to the Conservative Party – now it emerges that dave’s donors include the bosses of big firms which specialise in muscling in on the public sector.
Big society? NO It’s the Big Rip-off.
The Redbridge public need to know just where local conservatives and liberals stand on this massive privatisation agenda.
If you want a council that slashes front line services so as to create the conditions where local councils are forced to hand over the services for profit, then stand up and be counted – support our call for you to take the publics side against the government.”
